Als Vollender und Systematisierer der von Austin und Wittgenstein/Anscombe grundgelegten Sprechaktheorie ist John Searle (* 1932, Foto links, GNU FDL) der wohl bekannteste und einflussreichste Sprachwissenschaftler der Gegenwart. Er hat sich immer stärker mit der Philosophie des Geistes beschäftigt und auch hier Epoche machende Analysen vorgelegt. Sein Ansatz und Programm erhellt aus diesen Zitaten: „Most mainstream cognitive scientists simply repeated the worst mistake of the behaviorists: They insisted on studying only objectively observable phenomena, thus ignoring the essential features of the mind“ - „The philosophy of mind of the past fifty years ... is a [collective] compulsive neurotic ... repeating the same pattern of behavior over and over“ - „The ontology of the mental is an irreducibly first-person ontology [of conscious subjectivity]“ [John Searle: The Rediscovery of the Mind, Cambridge / Mass.,1992, XII, 31, 95].
